Closed Doors is based on the idea of doorways. Most explicitly, this is accomplished by the many faces of social activists on the door, who have been assassinated for their efforts to improve justice and peace in this world. I was motivated to create this piece of art because of the deep connection I feel to the people I have featured on the door. I feel it a duty to integrate the aesthetics of art with deeper meaning. Integral art is thus an expression that can be loosely defined as art that reaches through and synthesizes multiple levels (aesthetics, emotion, intellect, etc.) and perspectives, and unites the perennial themes of Truth, Good, and Beauty, which have permeated the traditions of Science, Art, and Philosophy for generations, into a solidified whole. Closed Doors explicitly explores the theme of integral art as doorways in three major ways; one, this piece explores the way in which victims of assassination represent doors to a brighter future that have effectively been closed; two, this piece, taking a cue from Marshall McLuhan’s argument that “the medium is the message," explores the use of art as a doorway to knowledge and activism; finally, this piece comments on the future of art as technologically integrated art, through the online version of the Closed Doors project |
